Israel Demands Complete Hamas Disarmament Before Gaza Exit
Israel has expressed "serious security concerns" to the US regarding the proposed agreement for Hamas to lay down its arms. An official from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office provided this information. Notably, this marks Israel's first public reaction since US President Donald Trump announced the deal earlier this week.
**Israel: Hamas does not truly want disarmament**
Doron Spielman, a spokesperson for the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, stated that Israeli intelligence agencies believe Hamas does not genuinely seek disarmament but rather aims to rebuild its military strength. The Israeli military will not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas completely lays down its weapons. Currently, the Israeli army controls more than 60 percent of Gaza.
"Our assessment is that if we withdraw our forces before Hamas fully lays down its arms, it will quickly expand its presence across Gaza, rebuild its terror infrastructure, pose a renewed threat to Israeli communities, and attempt another attack like the one on October 7, 2023," said Doron Spielman.
**Israel demands complete surrender of weapons**
Doron Spielman stated, "Disarmament means the complete surrender of weapons. We will accept nothing less." It is worth noting that Spielman's statement comes shortly after Hamas announced it would begin the disarmament process under a US-brokered ceasefire deal—originally reached nine months ago—to end the conflict that has been ongoing for nearly three years.
**Trump's 20-point Gaza plan**
While this is being viewed as a potential major breakthrough toward ending the Gaza conflict, significant obstacles and a lengthy process still lie ahead. Trump's 20-point ceasefire plan calls for the disarmament of Hamas and the destruction of its extensive tunnel network. This plan also proposes the phased withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza, the formation of a new Palestinian government comprising technical experts, the deployment of an international security force, and the redevelopment of Gaza.
