Cairo: The recent massive landslide in the Darfur region of western Sudan has had a devastating impact. The incident took place on Sunday in the village of Tarsin in the Marrah Mountains, where hundreds of people lost their lives after being buried under mud and rocks. According to information received on Friday, about 200 children have also died in this tragedy. 1000 more people are feared dead in this accident. Relief and rescue work continues A major aid organization 'Save the Children' said that so far 150 people have been rescued safely, including 40 children. All of them are being treated. Relief and rescue work is still going on on a war footing, but efforts are being hindered due to difficult geo-natural conditions and limited resources. The impact of the landslide is so widespread that the entire village has suffered heavy damage. Houses are buried under debris and the survivors are forced to live in the open. There is a huge shortage of water, medicine and food. Many people are still missing and their chances of survival are diminishing. Sudan Army calls it a major disaster Sudan Liberation Movement Army spokesman Mohammed Abdel-Rahman al-Nayar called the disaster terrible and confirmed that the death toll could be more than a thousand. He has appealed to the international community for immediate assistance, so that relief work can be accelerated and the lives of the survivors can be saved. Danger of further deepening of humanitarian crisis This disaster is further deepening the already existing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where problems like violence, political instability and economic hardship are already going on. The death of a large number of children has made this tragedy even more painful and shows that the most affected by natural disasters are often the weak and helpless sections.
