Ukraine met with Lockheed Martin and Raytheon before Trump, discussing weapons
Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump are scheduled to meet this weekend for a key meeting. Ahead of their meeting with Trump, a Ukrainian government delegation met with major US arms manufacturers, a senior Ukrainian official said. A delegation led by Ukrainian President Andriy Yermak and Prime Minister Yulia Svidenko met with representatives from Lockheed Martin and Raytheon in a Telegram post.
What was discussed during the talks?
Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian President's office, did not disclose what was discussed during the talks. Yermak said his country's cooperation with both companies is growing. He also said Ukraine expects further assistance to resist a full-scale war with Russia, which began on February 24, 2022.
Ukraine Needs Weapons
Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Yermak, posted on the social media platform X that Ukraine is seeking cruise missiles, air defense systems, and joint drone production agreements from the United States. Raytheon Company's Patriot air defense systems have been crucial to Ukrainian efforts to counter Russian long-range attacks and manufactures Tomahawk cruise missiles. Officials in Kyiv are keen to acquire Tomahawks, which would enable Ukraine to strike Russia's interior, including Moscow, with precision and large warheads.
Tomahawk Missiles to Be Discussed
Zelensky is expected to request the purchase of Tomahawk missiles during his meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office, but Washington has expressed hesitation over the move, fearing it could escalate tensions between the United States and Russia.
Trump warned Russia
Donald Trump recently warned Russia that he could send Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine if Moscow doesn't end its war soon. Putin stated that the Tomahawk missiles would not change the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Tomahawk issue was of utmost concern to Moscow.
