Yunus' Secret Deal: America's Deal Before Elections
Bangladesh, worried about the India-US deal, is trying to reach a secret trade deal with the US before the elections. Experts are concerned that the hasty move by the interim government's Yunus could harm the Bangladesh economy, especially the textile industry. This secret deal is questionable for the future government.
Dhaka, February 06: The much-discussed trade deal between India and the US has raised concerns within the Bangladesh government. After Donald Trump announced a trade deal with India, Bangladesh is also keen to sign a deal with the US as soon as possible. The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has kept this trade deal with the US secret, hoping to conclude it before the February 12 elections.
Yunus' secrecy regarding the US deal has raised many questions. Experts are asking why Yunus is in such a hurry to reach this deal and why he is not leaving it to the government formed after the elections.
The secrecy surrounding Yunus' deal with the US has worried exporters and stakeholders in Bangladesh's textile sector. Ready-made garments and textiles account for 90 per cent of Bangladesh's exports to the US. Bangladeshi businessmen say the country's textile industry has been weakened by tariffs imposed by Donald Trump last year.
If the secret deal further weakens the sector at this difficult time, it could completely derail Bangladesh's economy. Bangladeshi businessmen argue that Trump has set his sights on their country's key garment trade. Muhammad Yunus was appointed as the head of an interim government after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government.
The interim government's primary task was to hold elections in the country. After much delay, he finally announced that elections would be held on February 12. His interest in the deal during the election season has raised questions. The US-Bangladesh trade agreement is expected to be signed on February 9. Bangladesh will hold elections in three days, on the 12th.
Bangladesh has been accused of a secret deal with the US. Bangladeshi economist Anu Mohammed says that Yunus signed a deal to lease a port and import weapons just days before the election. This has raised suspicions about a secret deal with the US.
