Asima Chatterjee is the first Indian woman to earn a doctorate.
Asima Chatterjee was the first Indian woman to receive a doctorate in science. An expert in phytomedicine and organic chemistry, she developed drugs for epilepsy and malaria. She received the Khaira Professorship in the Department of Chemistry from the University of Calcutta. There she received special status in several departments. She was awarded the National Science Academy Fellowship in 1960 and the ‘Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar’ Award in 1961 for her work in chemistry.
