Do Governments Run Solely on Liquor Revenue?
Telangana: Liquor sales have become the very lifeline of government revenue. In the 2025-26 financial year, the state government generated a record-breaking revenue of a staggering ₹40,209 crore through liquor sales. This marks the first time since the formation of the state that such a massive volume of sales has been recorded within a single year. Sales this year exceeded those of the previous year by over ₹2,700 crore. This clearly demonstrates that liquor serves as the "golden goose" for governments.
