Russia Intensifies Airstrikes on Ukraine's Capital
Russia launched massive attacks using ballistic missiles and drones on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Saturday night. These attacks resulted in the deaths of at least nine people and left 22 civilians injured in Kyiv. In the city's Solomianskyi district, falling debris damaged a five-story residential building and ignited a fire. According to Ukraine's State Emergency Service, rescue workers evacuated 35 people from the building's upper floors; two people died, and eight others—including two children—were injured in the incident.
**Attacks across multiple Kyiv districts**
Emergency services reported that attacks in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district caused fires and damaged homes, vehicles, an administrative building, and a non-residential building, resulting in seven deaths and 14 injuries. Additionally, emergency personnel extinguished a fire at a non-residential building in the capital's Shevchenkivskyi district. No further information was available regarding initial reports from the district mayor about people being trapped in another residential building. Damage to commercial and residential buildings was also reported in two other districts of the city.
**Zelenskyy emphasizes need for allied support**
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged the US and other Western allies to provide more Patriot anti-ballistic missile defense systems to counter Russia's missile attacks. Late Friday, the Ukrainian leader stated that he had spoken with US Vice President-elect JD Vance and discussed his meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington earlier this week—a meeting Zelenskyy described as "positive and productive." In a Telegram post on Friday, Zelenskyy said, "Russian air attacks on our country continue, and air defense—specifically interceptors for Patriot systems to counter ballistic missiles—remains our top priority." Earlier, at the NATO summit in Ankara in July, Trump had stated that the US would grant Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot systems; however, during a cabinet meeting at the presidential residence in Camp David, Maryland, on Friday, he appeared to backtrack on this promise. He said that he had not yet made a final decision on the matter.
