Should the Ayyappa mala be removed at the same place where it was worn?
There is no such rule. After the pilgrimage is over, you can return home and break the vow in the presence of your Guru Swamy. It is said that the mala should not be removed in Sabarimala. Wearing the mala is the main qualification for having the darshan of the Lord. After reaching home, break a coconut at the doorstep, perform a puja, and ceremoniously remove the mala. The mala should be purified in milk and preserved. The place is less important than devotion and the disciplined observance of the vow. If the ritual is completed properly, the full benefit of the vow will be received.
