India's population is gradually moving towards old age. A shocking revelation has been made in a 2023 report of the Sample Registration System (SRS). The SRS report also states that the fertility rate in India is decreasing. According to the report, the proportion of working age group (15-59 years) population is increasing in India. However, there is a steady decline in the population of the 0-14 age group. What is the population of the 0-14 age group? According to the report released by the Sample Registration System, between 1971 and 1981, the share of the 0-14 age group declined from 41.2 percent to 38.1 percent, while between 1991 and 2023 this figure fell from 36.3 percent to 24.2 percent. SRS data released by the Registrar General of India has revealed that the country's total fertility rate has come down from 5.2 in 1971 to 1.9 in 2023 during the same period. How many people were surveyed? A sample population of about 88 lakhs has been included in preparing this report by SRS. This is one of the largest demographic surveys in the world. The report also found that in all the states and union territories of India, the number of boys in the age group of 0-14 is more than that of girls. The exception is the rural areas of Delhi where the ratio of girls is higher. How much is the working age group? According to the SRS report, the ratio of working age group in India has increased from 53.4 percent in 1971 to 66.1 percent in 2023. The highest percentage is in Delhi (70.8 percent) followed by Telangana (70.2 percent) and Andhra Pradesh (70.1 percent), while the lowest is recorded in Bihar (60.1 percent). According to the report, this category is 68.8 percent in urban areas, while this figure is 64.6 percent in rural areas. What is the elderly population? The SRS report states that in India, rural women in Jammu and Kashmir, and urban men in Assam have the highest share in the working age group. The elderly population in the country has also increased. People aged 60 years or above have become 9.7 percent in 2023. Kerala (15.1 percent), Tamil Nadu (14 percent) and Himachal Pradesh (13.2 percent) are at the forefront in this category.
