Do You Know About Aruna, Who Remained in a Coma for 42 Years?
The Supreme Court recently granted permission for the mercy killing (euthanasia) of Harish Rana (32), who had been in a coma for 12 years. This verdict was inspired by the case of Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse from Mumbai. After being raped and assaulted in 1973, she remained in a coma for 42 years before passing away in 2015. In 2009, when a journalist filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking mercy killing for her, the Supreme Court rejected the plea. However, subsequent verdicts delivered in 2011, 2018, and 2023 have effectively legalized mercy killing.
