El Niño Strikes Farmers
The state has been hit hard by El Niño, leaving farmers in deep distress. As crops wither due to a lack of rainfall and depleted groundwater, and the burden of cultivation-related debts looms large, farmers are crying out for help and urging the government to come to their aid. September—a crucial month for farming—recorded a staggering 80% rainfall deficit, far worse than the deficits seen in June and July. Consequently, the total area under cultivation has shrunk by approximately 4.58 lakh acres, with significant drops in the sowing of major crops like paddy, maize, and cotton.
