Fearing a potential shortage, many people are currently stockpiling fuel in their homes. However, according to the Petroleum Act of 1934, storing fuel in cans or plastic containers is a punishable offense. A first-time offender faces a fine of ₹1,000 or one month of imprisonment; a second-time offender will have to pay a fine of ₹5,000 and serve a three-month jail term. Furthermore, the petrol bunk's dealership license will be revoked. In the event that accidents occur resulting in loss of life due to such storage, the individuals involved will face criminal prosecution.
