Pakistani student sentenced after school row escalates into murder in England
London: Pakistanis bring shame to their country wherever they go or live. A similar case has emerged from the UK. A British-born Pakistani-born student has been sentenced to life imprisonment for stabbing a 15-year-old student to death at a school in Sheffield, northern England. The name of 15-year-old Mohammad Umar Khan was released by South Yorkshire Police after Justice Naomi Ellenbogen lifted an identity ban.
16 years to be served
During the sentencing hearing at Sheffield Crown Court, the judge ruled that Khan must serve at least 16 years before parole can be considered. Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Andy Knowles, senior investigating officer for South Yorkshire Police, said, "A key element that emerged during this trial was that Khan had the mistaken belief that carrying a knife would protect him or enhance his status." Umar Khan stabbed Harvey Willgoose in the stomach.
There was a fight at school.
The court was told that police were called to All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield on the afternoon of February 3rd following reports of a stabbing. A six-week trial earlier this year found that Harvey Willgoose had been stabbed, and Khan was arrested at the scene. The court heard how the two boys' dispute had escalated over a fight at school a week earlier. Mohammed Umar Khan denied murder, but was found guilty in August.
