Russian Tu-22M3 Bomber Crashes in Siberia, Crew Escapes Safely
Following a similar incident in the US, a Russian Tu-22M3 bomber has now crashed. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that the Tu-22M3 strategic bomber crashed on Monday during a training flight in the Irkutsk region of Siberia. The four-member crew, including the pilot, managed to eject safely in time; there were no fatalities in the crash.
**Used in the Syria and Ukraine conflicts**
The Tu-22—capable of carrying hypersonic 'Kinzhal' missiles—was codenamed 'Backfire' by NATO. It is a Soviet-era supersonic bomber that Russia also deployed in the wars in Syria and Ukraine.
**Video of the bomber crash emerges**
Several videos of the Russian Tu-22M3 bomber crash are circulating on social media. One video shows the aircraft diving into a densely forested area a short distance from the banks of the Angara River. Within seconds, the plane crashed into the forest, sending up a plume of smoke.
**Crew of four, including the pilot, ejected before the crash**
The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the four-member crew, including the pilot, ejected safely before the aircraft crashed. Everyone is completely safe and unharmed. The bomber was flying without any combat payload.
**Engine malfunction suspected as cause of crash**
Providing further details, Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev stated that the aircraft crashed near the village of Kamenka. Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze at the scene, and all four crew members were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Kobzev noted that preliminary information suggests an engine malfunction was the likely cause of the crash. US B-52 Bomber Crashes
Meanwhile, a US Air Force B-52 bomber crashed and burst into flames shortly after taking off from a base in Southern California's Mojave Desert. All eight people on board the aircraft were killed in the accident.
