US ‘Doomsday’ B-52 Bomber Enters Iran War
The ongoing conflict between Israel, the United States, and Iran is becoming increasingly lethal. In "Operation Epic Fury" against Iran, the U.S. Air Force has actively deployed its oldest—yet most formidable—strategic bomber: the B-52 Stratofortress (B-52H). This bomber has been in U.S. service since the 1950s; however, thanks to modern upgrades, it remains a vital component of America's Nuclear Triad to this day.
**Key Features of the B-52 Bomber**
The B-52 is capable of carrying nuclear bombs and nuclear cruise missiles (such as the AGM-86 ALCM).
It constitutes the air-based leg of America's nuclear deterrence strategy, providing the capability to launch nuclear strikes from land, sea, and air.
While the conflict with Iran has, thus far, involved only conventional weaponry, the B-52's nuclear capability has earned it the designation of a "Doomsday Bomber."
It boasts a payload capacity of approximately 70,000 pounds—meaning it can carry up to 32 tons of ordnance. This includes precision-guided bombs, cruise missiles, mines, and various other munitions.
It is capable of flying at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet over a range exceeding 14,000 kilometers.
It can execute long-range "stand-off" attacks—meaning it can launch strikes without having to penetrate deep into enemy airspace.
In the operation against Iran, which commenced on February 28, B-52s carried out strikes against Iranian ballistic missile sites, command-and-control centers, and other strategic targets.
As of March, three B-52s have been deployed to the RAF Fairford base in the United Kingdom, from where they are launching sorties to conduct strikes against Iran. According to CENTCOM, over 2,000 targets were struck within the first 100 hours of the campaign, involving B-52, B-1, and B-2 bombers.
How Dangerous Is It?
The strength of the B-52 lies not merely in its nuclear capability, but in its reliability and its capacity for large-scale strikes. Iran's air defenses have already been degraded, enabling large bombers like the B-52 to conduct deep-penetration strikes with minimal risk. While a conflict escalating to the nuclear level could spell global catastrophe, the United States has currently focused its efforts on conventional strikes. These aircraft are being utilized to neutralize Iran's missile sites and command centers. This bomber stands as a symbol of American air power—a platform that, despite being decades old, remains the most formidable threat to adversaries today.
