According to the Puranas, acceding to the wish of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva left Mount Kailash and established Kashi—situated on the banks of the River Ganges—as his permanent residence. For this reason, Kashi shines forth as the divine home of Shiva and Parvati, and as the City of Salvation (Moksha). It is widely believed that a *darshan* (sacred viewing) of the Vishwanath Jyotirlinga located here absolves one of all sins. In this sacred realm—where the cycles of life and death converge—Lord Shiva himself is said to grant salvation to those who breathe their last. That is why Kashi holds immense spiritual significance in Indian culture.
