Clashes between tribal and Bengali communities, shops and houses set on fire
Violence has erupted once again in Bangladesh, leaving three people dead in a tribal-dominated area. The Bangladesh Home Ministry said in a statement on Sunday that three tribals were killed in the violence that erupted in the hill district of Khagrachhari. Tension prevailed in the area, and the army and police were deployed there. The statement said, "The Ministry of Home Affairs expresses deep sorrow over the incident in which three hill people were killed and 13 army personnel, including a Major, three policemen, including the OC of the Guimara Police Station, and several others were injured in an attack by miscreants in the Guimara sub-district of Khagrachhari district."
The Ministry has assured that legal action will be taken against those involved in the incident soon after an investigation. No culprit will be spared. "Until then, the Ministry requests all concerned parties to maintain patience and calm," the statement said.
Unrest erupts after gang rape of student
According to local media reports, tensions erupted over the alleged gang rape of an tribal schoolgirl. A group called Jammu Students protested against the gang rape. At one point, clashes broke out between tribals and Bengalis. The Bangladesh government has banned rallies in the area.

Khagrachhari district is one of the three hill districts of the Chittagong Hill Tracts bordering India and Myanmar. The Home Ministry in Dhaka reported that 13 army personnel and three policemen were injured in the violence. According to police, the three deaths occurred in the Guimara area, 36 kilometers south of Khagrachhari, where the violence spread despite patrols by the army and paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, along with the police.
One Gang Rape Accused Arrested
Police reported that the girl was allegedly gang-raped while returning from tuition and was found unconscious in a deserted area of the city around midnight by her parents and neighbors. According to police, the girl was treated at a local hospital, while police, with military assistance, later detained a minor boy. Police suspect the boy to be the perpetrator and he is now being interrogated on a six-day remand under court orders.
