A major controversy arose when a gas agency was found to be registered in the name of Justice Siddharth Mridul—a former Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court and former judge of the Delhi High Court—while he was serving as a judge. This controversy also became an obstacle to his candidacy for the presidency of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Under the rules, individuals holding constitutional positions, such as judges, continuing in other business ventures constitutes a conflict of interest.
