Impact of War on ‘Polavaram’ Project
Amaravati: The ongoing conflict in West Asia has impacted the progress of works at the Polavaram project. Ammonium nitrate—a key explosive required to quarry rocks from adjacent hills for the Earth-cum-Rockfill Dam—is sourced from the Gulf region. A shortage of ammonium nitrate has arisen as existing stocks were depleted during recent blasting operations. Consequently, official sources revealed that blasting activities have declined by 30 percent. On a positive note, officials expressed satisfaction that the construction of the parallel diaphragm wall is proceeding on track and is expected to be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
