India’s First Female Doctor: An Inspiration to Many!
Dr. Anandibai Joshi was the first Indian woman to obtain a degree in Western medicine. Born in Maharashtra on March 31, 1865, she was married at the age of nine. When she was 14, she gave birth to a son; however, due to a lack of adequate medical facilities, the infant passed away just ten days later. Realizing the critical need for female doctors, she resolved to pursue a medical education. With her husband's encouragement, and defying societal norms, she traveled to the United States. She obtained her degree in 1886 and subsequently returned to India.
