Israeli forces seize flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza
Deir al-Balah (Gaza Strip): Israeli forces have seized a large flotilla carrying humanitarian aid for Palestinians trapped in the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Climate activist Greta Thunberg and several European lawmakers were also aboard the flotilla, who are being taken to Israel, where their deportation process will begin. The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced this on social media. It stated that Thunberg and the European lawmakers are safe.
The ship carrying humanitarian aid for Gazans was seized by the Israeli Navy while attempting to break the blockade. Israeli marines boarded the ship and detained dozens of European activists. The convoy, called "The Global Sumud Flotilla," consisted of approximately 50 smaller vessels carrying approximately 500 people. The convoy was carrying essential supplies, such as food and medicine, for Palestinians trapped in Gaza.
Israel bombs Gaza after seizing the ship.
While seizing the ship, the Israeli military launched a massive airstrike in the Gaza Strip. At least 57 Palestinians were killed in these Israeli attacks and gunfire. Israel launched this attack while Hamas has not yet made any decision on the peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump. Under Trump's plan, Hamas must return all 48 hostages, in exchange for which Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. In exchange for an end to the fighting, Hamas must relinquish power in Gaza and disarm. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted this proposal, but it does not mention recognizing Palestine as an independent state.
Palestinians want an end to the war.
The Palestinian people also want an end to the war, but many believe that Trump's peace plan favors Israel. A Hamas official told the Associated Press that some of the terms of the proposal were unacceptable, though he did not elaborate on these terms. Mediator countries like Qatar and Egypt also said that further negotiations were needed on some issues. According to officials at Nasser Hospital in Gaza, at least 29 people were killed in Israeli fire.
Officials said 14 of these people were killed in what is known as the Israeli military corridor, where essential supplies are distributed. Officials at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah said 16 people were killed in Israeli attacks and their bodies were brought to the hospital. Doctors Without Borders reported that one of its doctors was killed and four others were seriously injured in an attack in Deir al-Balah. The international organization described the doctor, Omar Hayek, as "extremely compassionate and professional."
