Supreme Court’s key verdict on industrial disputes
The Supreme Court has delivered a significant verdict regarding the ‘Industrial Disputes Act, 2020’. It was clarified that the broad interpretation of the term "industry"—established by the Supreme Court in 1978—does not apply to recent cases registered under this Act. A nine-judge bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant delivered this verdict with a 6:3 majority. However, the court stated that the definition of "industry" provided in 1978 by the bench led by the then Supreme Court Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer remains valid.
