'Supreme' Powers for Collectors in the War on Waste
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has bestowed supreme powers upon District Collectors to ensure the rigorous implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, across the country. It issued key orders conferring these statutory powers upon Collectors in accordance with the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The Court further directed the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to immediately issue a notification to this effect, as mandated under Section 23 of the Environment Act.
