What is a "Bhishma Pratigna" (Bhishma's Vow)?
The idiom "Bhishma Pratigna" is used to describe individuals who remain steadfastly committed to their word, no matter how many obstacles they may encounter. In the epic *Mahabharata*, Bhishma's original name was Devavrata. His father, King Shantanu, wished to take Satyavati—the daughter of the chieftain of the fishermen (*Dasha-raja*)—as his second wife. When the chieftain stipulated that only his daughter's son should succeed to the throne, Devavrata—seeking to ensure his father's happiness—agreed to the condition and vowed to remain a lifelong celibate. It was for this supreme sacrifice that he came to be known as Bhishma.
