India emphasizes the importance of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action
United Nations/Geneva: India has sharply criticized Pakistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Counselor of India's Permanent Mission to the UNHRC, K.S. Mohammed Hussain, issued a veiled criticism of Pakistan, saying that it is among the countries with the worst human rights records in the world. Therefore, instead of preaching to others, such a country (Pakistan) should focus on the state-sponsored persecution and systemic discrimination against religious minorities in its own country.
Pakistan criticized in Geneva
India sharply criticized Pakistan in the general debate during the 60th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Counselor of India's Permanent Mission, K.S. Mohammed Hussain, said, "We find it extremely ironic that one of the countries with the worst human rights records in the world (Pakistan) is trying to preach to others." He further said, "The nefarious attempts of this country to misuse this prestigious platform with fabricated allegations against India expose their hypocrisy. Instead of making baseless accusations, they should introspect on the state-sponsored persecution and discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities in their country."
Pakistan raised the Kashmir issue
Hussain responded after Pakistan raised the Kashmir issue. However, Hussain responded indirectly by referring to a country instead of Pakistan. India has repeatedly reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is and will remain an integral part of India. Hussain also said that India is continuously striving to ensure the human rights of its citizens and realize the Sustainable Development Goals. He said that member countries should reaffirm their commitment to the values of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action (VDPA).
The Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action, adopted at the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights, is a key document that strengthens the foundation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its objective is to promote and ensure the protection of human rights throughout the world.
