NCRB report: Delhi to lead in cases of crime against women in 2023
Data related to crime in various states of India has been released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The report of NCRB has informed that in the year 2023, the highest number of crimes against women in India have been recorded in the Union Territory of Delhi. However, the report also states that crime against women in Delhi has decreased by 5.59 percent in 2023 compared to 2022.
According to the information given in NCRB's report, a total of more than 13,000 cases of crime against women were reported in the capital Delhi in 2023. In 2022 there were 14,158 cases and in 2021 13,982 cases were reported. Delhi recorded the highest number of cases of domestic violence and rape among 19 metro cities. However, the report also states that the crime rate per lakh population in Delhi is 14.4 percent, which is lower than Indore and Jaipur.
In the year 2023, 1,088 cases of rape were reported in the city. 573 cases were reported in Jaipur and 196 in Mumbai. In the year 2023, 3,952 cases of kidnapping were reported. This rate is 52.2 percent, which is the second highest kidnapping rate after Patna (71.3 percent). According to the report, six cases of acid attack have been registered in Delhi.
Delhi recorded 114 cases of dowry, although the rate (1.5 percent) was lower than six other cities like Jaipur, Kanpur and Ghaziabad. Cases of cruelty to women by husbands were highest in Delhi at 4,219. According to the report, 1,048 cases of rape of girls were the highest in Delhi under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
Cyber crime against women is relatively low, with only 36 cases reported in the year 2023. More cases were reported in Bengaluru (127), Hyderabad (53) and Lucknow (41). These included crimes like publishing or sending sexual content, blackmail, defamation, creating fake profiles.
