The weather agency issued a moderate risk warning for low-lying areas.
Tropical Storm Matmo: The Philippines is still reeling from the earthquake, with Tropical Storm Matmo approaching on Thursday. The storm is expected to intensify as it moves toward China this weekend. The region was hit just a week ago by Typhoon Ragasa, one of the most powerful storms to hit Asia in years.
First the Earthquake, Now the Typhoon
The Hong Kong Observatory reported Thursday morning that Matmo had maximum winds of 65 kilometers per hour and was expected to move west-northwestward at a speed of about 22 kilometers per hour toward Luzon, the Philippines' most populous region. The central region of the Philippines is already reeling from the effects of the earthquake, which has caused several deaths.
Risk Warning Issued
The Philippine weather agency said the storm could make landfall in southern Isabela province or northern Aurora province on Friday and is likely to cross northern Luzon. The agency warned of a moderate risk of life-threatening storm surge in some low-lying areas over the next 36 hours, saying sea travel remains risky for all types of vessels.
Storm to Intensify
The Hong Kong Observatory predicts that Matmo will enter the South China Sea after hitting the Philippines and intensify into a severe typhoon, bringing strong winds and rain to the Asian financial hub (Hong Kong) over the weekend. It is expected to make landfall on Sunday along the coast of neighboring Guangdong Province, a major economic hub in southern China. It will then move northwestward into the Guangxi region and weaken and dissipate near Yunnan Province in southwestern China next week.
